#10 reflection and tech in the classroom

I would like to be teaching art to high schoolers, and I think that I could use both data collection and reporting in my classroom. Excel would be a great tool to help me organize my grades for individual assignments, keep records of student progress, see trends in grades over all and on individual assignments, as well as make it easy to calculate final grades. I would like to use data collection after assignments to evaluate students feelings on them, which would allow me to make changes or improvements for the next school year.

The blogs that I found most interesting reviewing were the ILPs. These assignments showed the creativity of my classmates and allowed me to be exposed to new forms of technology and new ideas that I could use in my classroom. The posts were really well written and often included programs I had never heard of before or thought to use in an educational setting.

The next tech skill that I would like to learn would be a better understanding of Photoshop. As a future art teacher, I think that this is a pretty basic program that can be used in many different ways in the classroom. I would like to be able to teach this to my students and incorporate technology in my curriculum. I could work on developing this skill by taking on the lynda classes that fsu offers for free to students as well as just going into the program and exploring the tools.

#9 Flipped Classroom and Powerpoint

The flipped classroom inverts traditional teaching models to provide greater in class interaction for students. The traditional model of in class lecture by a teacher with concept understanding through homework at home is reversed. Teachers can use technology such as video lectures to have their students to the instructional, lecture style learning at home. This then allows teachers to use class time to do activities and check/develop a deeper understanding of the material. One website that provides video lectures to students is Khan Academy.

Through the Information Dissemination project, I think I learned the most about powerpoint. I learned how to use master slides, which is a tool that I cannot believe I did not know about before. There have been so many times that I got frustrated by slide formatting and this would have been a solution. I also learned how to create audio narration for a powerpoint in this project and this could be useful to me for online materials for my class. I liked that I was able to create something similar to a class material but I found the recording process a bit frustrating.

Through the Interaction assignment, I learned about including audio clips into animations in a powerpoint, which could be useful to add to a class powerpoint. In this assignment I really enjoyed creating a game and if I were to do it again, I think I would just like to have done something a little more complex.

Reflection of diigo

As a tool, I think DIIGO does a really good job of organizing one's personal information and findings as well as connection someone to the ideas and articles of other people. I liked the ability to bookmark an article on a separate website, because it allowed for transfer to other computers besides a personal laptop. I also really enjoyed the tagging as a means of organizing the articles, so ideas do not get lost, and the ability to highlight and comment, so you can easily return to specific ideas on a website. Both of these features make it much simpler to recall the information on a specific site that you are wanting to remember.

I think that I will use social bookmarking in the future, specifically the bookmarking of websites and the groups. I will be able to use the bookmarking for both personal and professional usage, and the tags will give me the ability to separate these two while remaining on the same platform. I think that I will also use the DIIGO groups as a source of professional development, allowing me to connect with other educators and get new ideas for the classroom.

ILP Design- Prezi

For my Independent Learning Project, I used Prezi to create a presentation about watercolor techniques. Prezi is a presentation tool that exists online and allows the user to create an interactive presentation building off a present template. It allows the user to insert content such as images or PowerPoint slides within the prezi itself. Prezi functions on movement as the program pans from one slide to another, creating visual interest.

#8 Technology Trends

Last week we visited a lab that helps accommodate students with disabilities. It offered a wide range of technology that would make it easier for students to perform daily educational tasks. My favorite technology that was introduced was the LiveScribe pen, and this could have broad applications in schools for students with and without disabilities. The pen records a lecture and then can match the timing in the recording to notes that are written down by the student. This could be helpful for students who are reviewing for tests, to connect the teachers actual words to their notes, or for students that have difficulty processing all the information during a lecture, they would have chance to go back and hear the content again.

Bloom's taxonomy is six major categories that divide up educational goals. The main categories are: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Powerpoint can be used to help achieve these educational goals in a lesson. For example, a history lesson on the civil war may use PowerPoint to present information to the class. For remember, the teacher might list terminology and definitions onto the PowerPoint slide for the student to memorize. For understand, the teacher might include a bulleted list of questions for the students to answer aloud in class. For applying, the students might use a line tool to edit a photo of the US. The could draw a line that shows where the country was divided, in between the North and South. For analyzing, the teacher might insert a chart into the slide and have the students help them fill out a cause and effect chart for the causes of the war and their impending effects. For evaluating, a teacher might embed a video of a historian discussing his opinion on the reasons behind the south leaving the union. This could cause a class discussion where students either need to defend or argue against the historian's viewpoint. For create, the students could be divided up into groups and have to create their PowerPoints on a specific civil war battle which they will need to present to the class.

The Huffington Post Tech is a division of the main Huffington Post, a news website that posts daily updates on current events and trends, that deals specifically with technology. The site includes daily updated content on trends in technology from a variety of authors and technological fields.

DIIGO #4

This week, I learned that there are a lot more solutions to students with disabilities using technology than I had originally thought. There are increasing solutions for students with disabilities such as dyslexia, with programs that are not only helpful but also can be fun and inspire learning for students.

#7 Adaptive Technology and Website

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that accommodations to individuals with disabilities. One way that this translates into schools is with adaptive technology. These students may not be able to use technology traditionally, due to either physical or mental disability, but they are able to use it with the help of certain input and output devices. Devices for students with a physical disability might include a brail printer, voice recognition software for a student who cannot type, or alternative keyboards and/or switchboards who might not be able to use a normal mouse and keyboard.  A student with a learning disability might use a content mapping software, such as Inspiration, to link together ideas or a spell check software to help with word processing. These devices can help support both the use of the computer or learning while using technology. This technology was used in one of my classrooms in high school when a student with dyslexia had text from websites read aloud by the computer. Adaptive technologies would be very useful in the classroom to help students with disabilities, but these devices are often very pricey and would require training from the teacher.

I think that building the class website was something very beneficial for me as a future educator. Class websites are very common and building a website is a task that I will most likely have to do when I start teaching, so it was nice to have experience with this. I thought that the program we used was very intuitive and it made it very easy to place items on the page, and the type of item you were wanting. It felt like using virtual blocks to build the page. The only thing that I did not like was I found it kind of difficult to edit specific fonts. From working on this webpage project, I learned how to embed code into a website, putting in my google calendar. I also learned how to navigate a web creation software. Next time working on this assignment, I would like to take more time getting higher quality photographs to improve the website's aesthetics.
http://mskayladallen.weebly.com/

From DIIGO, I learned how to organize pages beyond simple book marking. The website allowed for coherent organization and the referencing of specific material within a website. I learned how to select specific material within a page that would be most helpful for future projects and the importance of having quality material. DIIGO could be used in my personal professional endeavors by letting me save specific ideas for lesson plans or relevant material for class. This would also be useful for team members, because the information in a group would be easy to share as well as highlight and sticky note specific content within a website and tell the group why this material is important. This could also be used in a classroom assignment for students to examine articles or other websites and be able to share these with the class. Other students would easily be able to access this material as well as make comments on it.

ILP

For my independent learning project, I worked with a program called Sketchup. As a future art teacher, I am always looking for new programs and technology that I can bring into my classroom and I think this would be a cool new technology to consider. This would be really great for students wanting to make models for larger scale projects, but this allows for technology as a nontraditional material. The program allows the user to create 3D models in a three dimensional space. You can use both lines and solid forms to create a model in the space. The tool does take a little bit of trial and error when you are starting out, so you can figure out how to use the different tools, especially when working with depth. I decided to create a model of a pavilion for my project. I used circle, polygon, square, and text tools most often to help create the structure.

#6 school websites and the tech sandbox

The school website that I chose was Northside Christian, which is a k-12 school and each teacher on staff has a teacher website. All of the teachers had pretty similar tabs and information on their pages which included a welcome page, meet the teacher, wishlist, homework, classroom files, and classroom links. These pages were meant to keep both the students and parents up to date. The page that I looked at was in the elementary school for a third grade classroom.

Technology can be a very useful resource in classsroom, but it also helps you as a teacher with your professional responsibilities. I think that I will use DIIGO to help me organize important information that I find online in a logical way that could be beneficial for lesson plans or classroom management. I think I will also use spreadsheets to help organize student information and grades. I may also use a program like Evernote to record lesson plans but also provide notes and feedback to myself on those plans and allow those to be saved digitally which can prevent loss.

In the tech sandbox, the object that I think I would use most in my classroom would be the 3D printer. I had the opportunity to use one during my academic art career and this is an experience I really want to bring to my students. It felt so high tech and creative at the same time! I think this would be a great way to bring technology into a traditional art classroom. I would have them use a program like sketch up to design their projects and then convert file to the printer software.

#5.5 DIIGO part 2

Web 2.0 allows users to not just see content but to also interact and respond with information on the web. This technology would be very useful in a classroom environment, because it goes beyond simple information retention to students being able to share their own opinions and to create their own topic, all with specific relevancy to a lesson.

#5 Web 2.0

Web 2.0 websites are a second generation of websites that allow for sharing and interaction among users. Blogs, twitter, and DIIGO are all web 2.0 tools that would be helpful in the clasrrom for students as well as support teacher development. Blogs can be used by students to help share ideas with each other on given topics, and teachers can use this tool to promote idea interaction. Twitter is a great tool for both students and teachers. For students, twitter can allow them to directly interact with first hand information, such as a class tweeting to a museum or an author, and it would allow for great direct responses. Teachers can use twitter as a part of their PLN, to network with other professionals and gain ideas for their classroom. DIIGO would allow students to save websites for things such as projects while teachers can save valuable information for teaching ideas and professional development, with a tagging system that makes the information easy to find and recover.

Animoto (https://animoto.com/) is a web 2.0 tool that allows users to create videos and slideshows that would be great for a classroom. The website is very easy to navigate and is suited for presentations or video creation. A teacher could use this website to create class presentations while students could use it in a video project to splice together clips and add music.

I think that Augmented Reality is the technological tool that has the biggest potential for future education. Augmented Reality allows the user to be submersed into a computer generated world that transports the user from the real world through the control of ones senses. This type of technology could be used greatly in the classroom for students to get a type of first hand experience with things that maybe very unfamiliar to them. One example of this might be a teacher using this in a history lesson on China and then allowing the students to get a first hand look at the landscape of country and the location that actual historical events took place.

#4.5 DIGGO

I am so excited to get to use this in the future, and I think it will be really useful for my personal and work in the future. From using DIGGO,  I learned there is a lot more free educational content out there that is not simply pure drill and practice, which will allow to students to learn not only the course material but also technological skills.

#4 Twitter, Active Learning, and the Digital Divide

On twitter, I have been interacting with both my classmates as well as popular twitter accounts. I have been able to see, like, and reply to the tweets of my classmates and the #2040fsu has allowed me to see answers from multiple users regarding the EME's twitter weekly questions. I have also been able to follow people's twitters that I enjoy and retweet some of their content. I have found it to be really beneficial and enjoyable because it feels more real time then something like Facebook and it distills information down to short character counts. I think that this could be beneficial as a teacher because it would provide quick access to educational content as well as allow you to be up to date on current information and trends.

The digital divide is the gap between those who do and do not have access to technology. The digital divide creates disparity among students and the student with access to technology at home has a greater chance for success. Students who use technology within the school environment, taught and used by teachers, with supplements at home are better prepared for college or the work force. The digital divide can be caused by socioeconomic status, funding for technology within a school, and geographical access to the internet. As a teacher wanting to teach high school art classes, technology can be supplementary to my classroom teaching. Digital projects can be assigned during classroom time while homework can be focused on more traditional artistic methods. I can also teach my students in the classroom how to use digital artistic tools such as Photoshop or Illustrator so they would be prepared to use these if needed in their future work.

The software that I will probably be using the least as a high school art teacher would be productivity software. My class would not have many drills, word processing documents, educational games, or a need for an organization of a large amount of data since most of the student work is very hands on. The graphics software for active learning, including illustration and draw programs, would be my most used software. This type of software is directly related to my connect and would allow for students to move away from traditional artistic methods to newer digital technique development. I specifically would like to work with drawing programs or 3d programs with my students.

The material in the E-course can be really applicable to my work here as a student. I think that video conferencing tools and those that allow for live collaboration would be the most helpful because the issues that I find most common are often finding a meeting time and sending/saving work. As a teacher, the content can be used in the classroom environments. Saving work to the cloud will help prevent from losing student files and webinars might be a good option to use for a class with a guest lecturer. The importance of cloud storage resonated with me the most because I want to make sure I save all of my files off my computer because of fear of computer malfunction and the loss of large amounts of time and effort on school projects. I thought the activities were smooth and a good evaluation of the content. The only major issue that I faced was in the very last wrap up typed answers. I was trying to break up the information into paragraphs since there are multiple questions, and when I hit enter to do a line break, it automatically submitted it, not allowing me to finish my response.

Blog #3: ELA and "open" content

The ELA standard that I feel most comfortable with teaching would be the SL.2 Integrate and Evaluate. The standard states one should "integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats including visually, quantitatively, and orally". I have experience working with different forms of technology, especially in the arts, and I would be able to translate this wide use of media to my students.

The ELA standard that would require the most learning for me is W/WHST.2 Write to explain/inform. I tend to be more visual in my representation and I am a visual learner so I think I would need to work on organizing content and complex ideas in non visual ways using technology.

Studying art education allows me to work with students across any age range, from K-12, since it is a subject that is taught to all students. I would like to work with high school students, from ages 15-18, because it will allow me to work with more complex techniques as well as students who are more serious about art because this is often an elective.

Digital citizenship is becoming more relevant to students since technology is becoming more integrated into their daily lives. The concepts that I feel would be most relevant to my classroom are the awareness and obedience of copyright laws and the fostering a meaningful community and the advancing of topics and the community as a whole. I would like to use Photoshop and InDesign in my classroom and awareness of copyright laws would be useful with these programs since they use a lot of digital images.

The three major "open" terms in the podcast were open education, open content, and open source. Open education deals with the sharing of information for educational purposes that was traditionally bound by the classroom. The website, http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/ELi7061.pdf ,details the use of open education can come from a variety of sources that develop educational resources, which are electronic and are often under some form of creative commons license.  Open content refers to a work that others can adapt and/ or copy. The term often applies to software and are under an open content license rather than copyright. Open source is when code is available and readily modified. This allows for public modification by a multitude of users to improve the code.

The newsletter allowed me to refresh my skills in word. A new skill that I learned was how to format columns throughout a document. I knew of the column feature before and used it in papers, but I always struggled with having columns throughout the entire document and not at just one specific piece. I think it is really helpful to know you can switch the amount of columns throughout the document. I liked that I was able to explore the idea of a newsletter, something I may choose to do in my future career. In order to improve next time, I think that I can use better quality images that flow better in the newsletter. I think for my future career, I think learning how to put a functioning email link is really helpful because it can be used in any type of information that I send out to the parents of my students.

#2 Microsoft word and copyright

Microsoft Word has become very commonplace in my educational experience for both teachers and students. I regularly use Word for typing papers, which makes formatting and citations streamline, as well as taking notes during lectures. My teachers often use Word for creating a syllabus, course calendar, or assignment instructions. This program has become the base for sharing written material electronically in the classroom.

Copyrighted and fair use materials continually appear in classrooms for me. Professors use both written and digital copyrighted material at their discretion to improve student learning. I had a professor last semester upload a chapter of a textbook to blackboard as a part of our assigned readings for his class. I have another professor who showed clips of documentaries in class to help us understand artistic concepts. Students will use copyrighted material in their own works and it is never too early to teach them about citing work that is not their own, even if they are using it for their own research purposes. As the students get older, a teacher can go more in depth into copyright ideas, intellectual property, and profit versus non for profit organizations. As a teacher, you can incorporate copyrighted material into instructional materials under fair use. Some considerations need to be made though including the necessity of the material for leaving versus entertainment, the necessity of the amount of the source (which often can reduce a material to clips or excerpts rather than the whole work), attributing copyrighted material when used, and meet professional standards of curriculum development.

The first implementation issue proposed in the textbook is academic honesty. This is one of the most important issues that needs a solutions in the classroom because it sets students up creating unique thought but also the underlying importance of crediting others for their work. As a solution in my classroom I would verbally go over the schools academic honesty policy and have them sign a document saying they would uphold this policy. I would also teach my students one of the citation methods so they would know how to properly give credit to someone's intellectual property within their own work. I would also use one of the plagiarism check sites such as Turnitin.com when students turn in papers to check for plagiarism in their work.

Another implementation issue is privacy. I would want students to be able to feel a sense of security in the classroom when it comes to their grades and personal information. I would want to go over the characteristics of a good password with my students to help them maintain privacy online. I also would post students grades to their accounts individually to help maintain academic privacy of their grades.

The last implementation issue is cyber bullying. This issue is very important to propose a solution to because of its prevalence in the current school climate. I would go over with my students the districts policies on bullying and cyber bullying. I would also describe the negative effects that this behavior can have on someone and offer students a safe environment where they can discuss with me any problems they are having with this issue. I think also sharing testimonials or video clips from victims of cyber bullying could be helpful because it can show the real life implications that this behavior can have.

#1 technology with students and teachers

Part of becoming a teacher in the 21st century includes a need to technological proficiency. Requirements such as this class at university, technology requirements for licensure, and educational standards that require technological implementation in the classroom all require future and current educators to work with technology in the classroom. Technology can also enhance the planning and implematation of lesssons, helping to lighten the load of teachers. Online tools are available to help streamline administrative tasks and websites are available to help with lesson plan organization and development. Students may use technology in the classroom as an extension of their everyday lives and to help learning development. Technology can be used to reinforce learning in the classroom by building upon knowledge and skills taught to them. It can be used to provide individualized checks on learning progress in situations where teachers may not have time to work one on one with students to check their understanding of material. The great amount of diversity in the classroom influences the students need for technology. Students with different learning styles may be presented material in different ways to help maximize their understanding. Students with disabilities may also help find technology helpful for their learning and many accomadations may be made to help them use technology as well.

The ISTE standards are a set of guidelines developed to create skills and qualities in students that will equip them to work in a technological world, and for teachers to ensure professional competency with technology and to positively influence students relationships with it. The standard that I liked the most was "Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and the opportunities of living, leaning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal, and ethical." I really enjoyed seeing this standard on there because I think students tend to overlook the impact that their online usage can have on other people. The internet can tend of have a sense of annonymty and I think it is important for students to learn to behave in an ethical manner when using technology. The standard that I felt the most out of my skill set was "Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working with teams locally and globally." I think it may be possible to have students collaborate locally in the self contained classroom environment but working on a more global scale seems difficult. I am not really sure how to go about moving collaboration to this larger scale and what kind of technology would be most effective in doing so.

Digital native is someone that has grown up with technology being apart of their cveryday life and ineratcions; this includes individuals who may not remember a time without computers or cellphones. I think that this is an appropriate label for today's youth because technology is becoming increasingly engrained in our daily lives and children are beginning to interact with technology at younger ages. Digital natives are also categorized by their fearlessness in trying technology and favor a hands on "try it" approach to learning new forms of technology. I have seen a difference in the way my classmates and teachers would use technology. Teachers often found it more difficult to navigate with technology and would encounter problems that a student may not. In my experience a teacher often asked students for assistance when they were facing technical problems in the classroom. My teachers often stuck to more traditional presentation tools such as PowerPoint, where students tended to be more creative when doing presentations and using different platforms such as Prezi. I am sure the same issues that we faced with our teachers will be relevant when we become teachers ourselves. Our students will be most likely more knowledgeable in new technologies.

#0 Technology Introduction and Learning Styles

Technology is something that is a part of my everyday life. I feel like I am constantly interacting with some technological platform, whether that be a phone, television, tablet or computer. I have used technology in several of my classes and it has been very helpful on collaborative work or understanding complex topics. I took a class in high school that covered basic Microsoft suite, technological vocabulary, and basic platforms. For the art requirements in my major, I took a digital foundations class that outlined the relationship between art and technology. I got to use some really unfamiliar technologies, including a 3D printer,  and to see how I can incorporate this into my own work.

In this class, I would like to find some types of technology that I would be able to use in my own classroom. I think technology is becoming increasingly important for student engagement as well as for their future competency. I would also like to become more proficient in some of the programs that I am currently using.

The learning styles chart below detailed my styles in four basic areas. The results state that I am a more active learning, a balanced sensory and intuitive learner, a visual learner, and a global learner. Each of these aspects play an important role in how I obtain information as well as study. I always assumed that I was a more visual learner because of my attraction to art, but I did not realize to the degree of which I was. This is very helpful when I study because developing charts and visual aids are helpful in my study process.
